In Somalia, the illiteracy rate is 62.2 percent. The level of literacy in a society is crucial for its economic development and resistance to natural disasters, hunger, and disease. ‘Education’ is the answer to the many questions that children and young people in Somalia have. Cuun village in Somalia is a natural disaster-affected area. Every year there are droughts and sandstorms, making it extremely difficult to grow anything at all.
And almost everyone relies on what they can grow to survive. Thanks to the commitment and the WFP initiative, which is financed by the European Union through the International Partnerships Instrument (INTPA), no one in the Cuun settlement no longer has to go hungry.
More than 200 small-scale farmers in Cuun will be provided with essential tools such as drip irrigation, solar-powered water pumps, and the new smart greenhouses from the Diakonia Greenhouse Project, Sweden. The net ensures that the greenhouses can better withstand the wind and prevent insect damage. And drip irrigation makes efficient use of the available water.
Somcare wants to build new schools and expand existing schools in remote villages in Somalia, especially the stable regions such as Somaliland and Puntland, and change the low school enrollment rates with a broad school enrollment campaign.
