Schools as a way out of poverty
We have been building schools in Somalia and Ethiopia since 2021. On June 1, 2021, construction began on the first cleft school in Somalia. This project is funded by our partner organization, the Reiner Meutsch Foundation FLY & HELP. The facility consists of four classrooms, a library, an administrative office, and two first aid rooms.
SOMCARE received a donor from Germany who donated all the school furniture for this school. The transport of the furniture was made possible by a transport subsidy (TKZ) from Engagement Global as part of its development cooperation program. This school will provide rehabilitation services, such as literacy and speech therapy, to children with cleft lip and palate after surgery. Garowe, located in northeastern Somalia, is the capital of the Nugaal region and the administrative capital of the Puntland state in northern Somalia.
DALSAN Primary School aims to be a girls-friendly school. To ensure girls feel comfortable at school, they need safe, private spaces and the opportunity to use the toilet and wash themselves. In Somalia, using the toilet is traditionally associated with shame, especially for women and girls. Therefore, it is very important to respond sensitively to girls’ needs. To protect girls from prying eyes, their toilet and washing area will be separate from that of the boys.
In addition to building schools, Somcare aims to specifically support girls’ development: Education: Families, community members, and teachers should be informed about girls’ rights (e.g., to education) and how communities benefit from supporting girls.
The construction of a school for girls should make it easier for parents to convince their daughters to attend school. The girls will be taught by local teachers, thus increasing parents’ trust in the school. These women also serve as role models for the girls, encouraging them to continue their learning efforts.
