Who we are
The association Somalia Medical Care eV, or SOMCARE for short, was founded on July 1, 2013. The founding initiative came from Somali immigrants with medical expertise living in Germany and activists. All three association boards work on a voluntary basis. The association is registered as a registered association with the Mannheim District Court. SOMCARE is recognized as a non-profit organization in the sense of the German Tax Code (AO).
In our health projects, we are committed to providing access to healthcare for people in need and to sustainably strengthening the health systems in Somalia and Ethiopia. Among other things, we aim to reduce maternal mortality and sustainably improve the health of children.

VOLUNTEERSince 2013, SOMCARE has sent up to 100 tons of medicines and other relief supplies as donations in kind to Somalia and Ethiopia. Since 2018, Somcare has received funding for smaller projects. Other revenue comes from monetary donations and member contributions . We focus on the needy population groups, enabling vital operations such as cleft, clubfoot, obstetrics and gynecological fistula operations, and training local doctors. We also support the education and water supply of the people in Somalia.
On March 23, 2022, the Somcare Hospital and DCKH Cleft Center were officially opened. This was followed by the first relief operation, in which 55 children were operated on . Since February 2024, Dr. Samatar, a young Somali/Ethiopian surgeon trained by Deutsche Cleftf Kinderhilfe, has been independently performing operations in Jijiga and Garowe. It is a great blessing for the families in these very poor countries to now have a permanent contact point where they can receive qualified help for their children.
In addition to the hospital, Somcare built a cleft school in 2021, financed by our partner organization Reiner Meutsch Foundation FLY & HELP. This school helps children with cleft lips and palates to receive rehabilitation services such as literacy and speech therapy after surgery. Another project was funded by the EZ Small Projects Fund, a solar system for the electricity supply of the health center, which enabled an operating room and various examination and anesthesia equipment to be put into operation. This project has helped three communities in Somalia to reduce child and maternal mortality from 20% to 2% and many patients to receive the treatment they need.
