Help for children with cleft lip and palate
The aim of the project is to treat cleft lip and palate patients (also known as cleft patients) from the Somali people in East Africa. The project partners are the NGOs Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe e.V. (DCKH, spaltkinder.org) from Freiburg and Somcare e.V. (somcare.net) from Heidelberg.
The project name “Somali people” is intended to clarify that the aid is intended to benefit people from the entire Somali-speaking area, which also includes parts of Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Kenya. Many Somalis in these countries continue to live in impoverished conditions of nomadic pastoralism. In this region, which is sometimes very poor, there are currently no established treatment options for cleft patients, only sporadic surgical mission.
The entire region is extremely poor, and healthcare is sometimes very poor. Many aid projects in Somalia are concentrated in the capital, Mogadishu, but even there, there are no regular treatment options for children with clefts. The project aims to create a permanent center for cleft patients, run by local physicians qualified by the DCKH, which will also ensure ongoing, qualified follow-up care for the patients.
The core of the project was the establishment of several cleft centers with qualified, exclusively local staff in the Somali region of Puntland and at a partner clinic in the city of Jijiga in neighboring Ethiopia. Following several successful missions involving volunteer German DCKH physicians and other staff from DCKH projects in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, Dr. Samatar, a young Somali/Ethiopian surgeon trained by Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe, has been independently performing operations in Jijiga and Garowe since February 2024. It is a great blessing for families in these very poor countries to now have a permanent contact point where they can receive qualified help for their children.
