We at Somalia Medical Care eV are delighted about the financial support for our project from the “bwirkt!” funding program of the Baden-Württemberg Development Cooperation Foundation (SEZ) and about the public recognition in the form of an award. Our association has been active for 9 years and has brought about significant changes/improvements in relation to water shortages in Somalia. This form of cooperation is an example of a living partnership between Baden-Württemberg and countries in the global south. Many children die from extreme water shortages in Somalia. Due to frequent droughts, the few water sources dry up. Most families can only quench their thirst at public water sources, which are, however, dirty or contaminated with pathogens.
MdL Andrea Schwarz presented the award to Somcare Chairman Mohamed Ali.
We drilled a well one hundred meters deep, installed a solar-powered pump and built a water reservoir. By providing clean drinking water, we were able to improve the living conditions of over 2000 people and the new mother-child clinic in the Hodan district of Garowe, Somalia. In particular, we were able to reduce the death rate due to contaminated water. This project also enabled many children to go to school again instead of carrying contaminated water many kilometers home.
Somalia Medical Care eV would like to thank the Foundation for Development Cooperation Baden-Württemberg (SEZ) for its financial support of this project through the funding program “bwirkt!”.
