A Vision Becomes Reality
Mohamed Ali was born in Somalia and left his homeland in 1988. Despite the great distance, however, his connection to his country and to the people of the Horn of Africa has remained strong. In 2013, he founded the organization Somcare – Somalia Medical Care e. V. in Heidelberg, Germany. From the very beginning, his goal was clear: from Germany, he wanted to help the people in his homeland and, in particular, provide children and families with access to urgently needed medical care.
Somalis make up the majority of Somalia’s population. In addition, large Somali communities live in the neighboring regions of Kenya, Ethiopia, and Djibouti. For Mohamed Ali, it has always been a matter close to his heart to provide medical assistance and new hope to people, regardless of where they live.

Medical Supplies for People in Need
Since founding Somcare in 2013, Mohamed Ali has also been committed to providing medical assistance to people who urgently need it. Over the years, he has organized and facilitated the delivery of up to 100 tons of medicines, medical supplies, and medical equipment from Germany to Somalia and Ethiopia as in-kind donations.
These aid shipments reach people in regions where access to medical care is particularly difficult. In Ethiopia, facilities and people in the regions of Siti, Jijiga, and Dollo have received support. In Somalia, the deliveries have reached areas ranging from Zeila in the northwest of the country, to Garowe in Puntland, and Kismayo in southern Somalia.
Supporting Children with Cleft Lip and Palate
An important milestone was reached in 2020 through cooperation with the German Cleft Children’s Aid (Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe – DCKH). This marked the beginning of long-term medical support for children with cleft lip and palate in the Horn of Africa.
Initially, the joint efforts focused on targeted surgical missions in Ethiopia and Somalia. International medical teams from the DCKH partner network traveled to the region to provide children with cleft conditions with urgently needed treatment.
The first mission took place at Somcare Hospital in Garowe. Garowe is the capital of the Somali region of Puntland and also the hometown of Mohamed Ali. Somcare Hospital itself was established with financial support from the German Cleft Children’s Aid. This created an important medical center for people in the region.
Helping Children with Severe Burn Injuries
In 2026, Mohamed Ali achieved another important milestone. He was able to bring a medical team from Interplast Germany to Somcare Hospital in Garowe for a specialized medical mission. Children and adults with severe burn injuries repeatedly sought help at the hospital. Many of them suffered from what are known as burn contractures. Severe scarring following burns can cause joints and parts of the body to become severely restricted in their movement. For those affected, this often means pain, disability, and a significant reduction in their quality of life.
The Interplast Pilot Mission in March 2026
From March 20 to 29, 2026, more than 150 people with a wide range of injuries and medical conditions came to Somcare Hospital in Garowe. The Interplast medical team was ultimately able to help 27 children and adults suffering from severe burn contractures.
Behind every number is a personal story: a child whose freedom of movement had been severely restricted; a person who could barely manage everyday activities because of old burn scars; a family that had been waiting a long time for medical assistance. For these people, the mission meant much more than medical treatment. It meant hope, restored mobility, and a better quality of life.
Building Bridges Between Germany and Somalia
The success of these medical missions is closely linked to the personal commitment of Mohamed Ali. For many years, he has worked to connect medical partners from Germany and other countries with healthcare facilities in Somalia.
He sees himself as a bridge-builder between two worlds: between Germany, where medical expertise, experience, and international networks are available, and Somalia, where many people are urgently in need of this support. His personal story makes his commitment particularly meaningful. Mohamed Ali left his homeland decades ago, but he never lost his connection to the people there.
What once began as a vision has now developed into a network providing tangible and concrete assistance.
Looking Ahead
The mission in March 2026 is not intended to be a one-time event. Mohamed Ali is working to organize further medical missions and to help even more children and adults in his former homeland. Together with medical partners, humanitarian organizations, and dedicated doctors and healthcare professionals, he hopes to continue reaching people who otherwise would have little or no access to specialized medical treatment.

The story of Somcare demonstrates what can be achieved when personal commitment, medical expertise, and international cooperation come together. What began as a vision in Heidelberg in 2013 has now left a tangible impact in Somalia. Somcare Hospital in Garowe is more than just a hospital: it is a place of hope.Through his commitment, Mohamed Ali wants to ensure that children and adults are not left alone with their injuries and disabilities.
